This Essay discusses the art of Caspar David Friedrich, which evokes mystery, a sense of the transcendent or what Edmund Burke termed ‘the sublime.’ Reference is made to three works, Morning Mist in the Mountains (1808), On the Sailing Boat (1819), and A Walk at Dusk (1835). Consideration is given to Burke’s A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and the Beautiful (1990), Vaughan’s Romantic Art, (1978), as well as Blayney’s Romanticism, (2001).
