Explain about the legal aid system.
Created in 1949, second of its type in the world. Intended to help eligible persons who could not afford legal representation and advice in criminal and civil matters to have their bills paid by the state.
It has been reformed and reduced, to cut costs. Recipients are being asked to make contributions, but legal aid still is available for crime charges.
Legal aid no longer available for divorce, child contact, welfare benefits, employment and other.
